Monthly Same-Store Sales Summary – April 2012

Gap reported that net sales were flat at $1.15 billion in April, while same-store sales fell 2% compared to a 8% gain in the year-ago period. Comps by segment were: Gap North America +4% vs +2%, Banana Republic North America +1% vs +11%, Old Navy North America -6% vs +14%, and International -6% vs -1%. For the fiscal first quarter, net sales increased 6% to $3.49 billion and comparable store sales rose 4% compared to a 3% decline in the prior-year period. “We delivered a solid first quarter as spring product continued to do well across all brands,” said Glenn Murphy, chairman and chief executive officer of Gap Inc. The company expects diluted earnings per share for the first quarter to be in the range of $0.44 to $0.46 compred to $0.40 in Q1 2011. As a result of sales performance, the company expects inventory dollars per store at the end of the first quarter to be below its previous guidance of about flat on a year-over-year basis.
